Songbong need more people involved in their drum/dance group for the MidWinter. Practices are Saturdays 3pm to 5pm at Mojos (Leith Street) or on the Museum front lawn according to the weather. You'll find more info on their site www.songbong.co.nz under "performers wanted".
Public lantern making workshops will be held in the three weekends prior to the Carnival. Over 300 children and families attended last year’s workshops and this year we are expecting more. Everyone is welcome. Make a lantern and you automatically become part of the Lantern Procession on the night of the Carnival. Exact times and places will be posted on this website in the near future. They will also be advertised in the Fink Entertainment Guide, in the Star community noticeboard and on radion station 4XO.
Workshop Dates: 29-30 May, 5-6 June, & 12-13 June
The 2004 Carnival is designed and curated by artist Juliet Novena Sorrel. Juliet has directed the 2003, 2002 and 2000 Carnivals. Other major contributors are Dunedin drumming group Songbong, musician Sam Cummings, fire performers Highly Flamable, and pyrotechnicians the Magic Lantern Company.
The Carnival is run by Dunedin Midwinter Celebrations, a charitable trust. Funding is gratefully received from the Community Trust of Otago, Dunedin City Council, and Creative New Zealand. Special thanks to this year’s event sponsor Tamahine Knitwear and Market sponsor Fishers Meats for their generous support.
